William Robert Helm, known lovingly as Bill, passed away on June 1, 2026, in Bethesda, Maryland, at the age of 71. He was born on December 28, 1954, in Monticello, Illinois, and his life was marked by devotion to family, service, and the simple joys that brought happiness to those around him. Bill died of cardiac arrhythmia and asystole, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and steadfast care for the people who knew him best.

Bill was a beloved husband to Violeta Helm, who survives him, and a cherished father, stepfather, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is also survived by his children, stepchildren, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family and close friends. His large and loving family was central to his life, and he treasured every gathering, conversation, and shared memory. He was one of 18 siblings and is survived by Robert, Irene, Kenny, Nora, Ray, Arlene, Grace, Alberta, Rosie, Linda, Phyllis, and Floyd. He was preceded in death by May, Lillian, Thomas Christopher, Clarence, and Aggie. The bonds he shared with his family were deep and enduring, and his presence will be missed in countless ways.

In his early years, before his military service, Bill was known for his strong work ethic and steady routines. He attended Bible study every Saturday without fail, a commitment he kept faithfully throughout his youth. He also worked Friday nights at a bakery, where he helped mix dough and prepare donuts, learning responsibility and discipline at a young age.

Bill graduated from Lakeview High School in Decatur, Illinois, in 1974. Shortly after, he began a 20-year career in the United States Navy, a time that shaped his strong sense of discipline, duty, and quiet strength. He carried those values with him throughout his life. Following his military service, Bill worked as a Supervisor Locator, where he was known for his dependability, strong work ethic, and steady approach to his work. Whether in uniform or in civilian life, he was respected for his integrity and reliability.

Bill also knew how to enjoy life and create lasting memories. In his younger years, he loved fishing with his siblings, gathering around bonfires, and sharing hotdogs and marshmallows while laughing and playing together. These moments of joy and togetherness remained an important part of who he was and reflected the warmth he brought to family life. He especially loved singing karaoke, and his voice and spirit could brighten a room and bring smiles to those around him. He was known as loving, funny, and handy and those are the qualities that made him both comforting and memorable to family and friends alike.

Bill Helm will be remembered for his generous heart, his strong sense of family, and the many ways he showed love through both words and actions. He leaves behind a life rich in devotion, service, and cherished memories. Though he is no longer physically present, the influence of his kindness, humor, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

A committal service with military honors will be held at Lyons Cemetery on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 2:00 P.M. EDT.
