Lovell (Saunders) Cottrell

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Lovell Saunders Cottrell on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at the age of 89.  A devoted woman of faith, she was a shining example of love and kindness, deeply committed to her family and her Creator.  Nanny’s life was a testament to her love for God and her unwavering devotion to those around her.  She cherished every moment spent with her family, always ready with a warm hug, a kind word, and a smile that could light up any room.  Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her family to the many animals she cared for with boundless affection.  Her home was a sanctuary for a variety of animals, including majestic peacocks, graceful horses, cheerful birds, and endearing geese.  Nanny’s dedication to her animals was remarkable; she protected and cared for them with the same fierce love she showed her family. Above all, Nanny’s grandkids meant the world to her.  Her love and devotion to them was immeasurable, and she would brag about their accomplishments and joys at every opportunity.  They were her pride and joy, and she celebrated each of their milestones with boundless enthusiasm and affection.  Nanny never met a stranger.  Her friendly demeanor and genuine interest in others meant that anyone she encountered quickly became a friend.  Her greatest joy, however, came from interacting with babies.  She never passed a baby without stopping to say hello and making every effort to elicit a smile.  Her ability to spread joy and warmth was unparalleled.  Though she has left us, Nanny’s legacy of love, faith, and kindness, will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.  She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched.

Nanny was born February 6, 1935, the daughter of Carr Richard, Sr., and Manervia Saunders Hall.  She was a longtime member of Vine Grove Baptist Church and retired after many years from Sears and Roebuck.

Nanny was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 65 years, Raymond Cottrell, Sr.; her granddaughter, Ashley Tyree; two sisters, Dorothy Garnett and Thelma Cecil; and two brothers, Richard Saunders, Jr. and Ray Hall.  She is survived by her son, Raymond Cottrell, Jr. and his wife, Karen, and her daughter, Brenda Tyree and her husband, Mike; her brother, Stuart Saunders; seven grandchildren, Joseph (Willa) Tyree, Ryan (Nicole) Tyree, Chris (Amber) Cottrell, Angie (Cliff) Wise, Aron (Kim) Cottrell, Devin (Jennifer) Darnall, and Dustin (Alana) Darnall; 24 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; her foster daughter, Peggy; and three foster grandchildren, Amy, Mandi, and Anna; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Nanny’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 19, 2024, at the chapel of the Hager Funeral Home, with Chaplain Larry Vance officiating.  Burial will follow in Cap Anderson cemetery.  Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, and from 9:00 AM until the time of service on Friday.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Vine Grove Baptist Church in her memory.  Rest in peace, Nanny.  Your love will continue to guide us!
