Mr. Garnie Ray, age 83, of Battletown, KY, passed away on Monday, November 11, 2024, at Norton Hospital in Louisville, KY. Garnie was born on June 18, 1941, the son of Garnie and Iona Elizabeth (Purtillar) Ray, Sr. Garnie was first and foremost a great Christian man. He was a longtime member of Cold Spring Baptist Church where he served as deacon for 45 years. He worked for Local 181, Operating and Engineers since 1973 and in 1984, started his own excavating business, Garnie’s Backhoe and Highlift Service, which he operated until 2010. Garnie loved many things but he especially enjoyed drag racing, boating, motorcycle riding and old cars.
Garnie was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Barbara Jean Dobbs; his son, Gerald “Jerry” Ray; three brothers, Phillip, Pete and Jim Ray; and two sisters, Marietta Montgomery and Ruth Bauchman. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Dolores Benock Ray; two daughters, Sonya Harshfield and Freida Lynn Carby; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and special friends, Rick and Carol Webb.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, November 18, 2024, at Cold Spring Baptist Church with Brother Mike Ford officiating. Burial will follow in Benock Family Cemetery in Battletown, KY. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024, from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM at the chapel of Hager Funeral Home and on Monday from 11:00 AM until the time of service at the church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hager Funeral Home to aid the family with funeral expenses.
