Joanna Best Lucas was born Dec. 10, 1930 in Big Spring, Ky. as one of four children to Shelby and Anna Best. She lived in Big Spring until she moved to Nazareth Home in Louisville, Ky. in January 2023 to receive skilled nursing care. She passed away peacefully at Nazareth Home on June 22, 2024 at 93 years old.
Joanna married Harold Lucas in 1947, and they were married 41 years before his passing in 1988. Joanna and Harold had four children: Bob (Linda) Lucas, Dan (Jessie) Lucas, Allen Lucas (still born), and David (Annette) Lucas.
In addition to farming with her husband and sons, Joanna was a factory worker at Busman’s in Elizabethtown, Ky. for more than 20 years. Joanna was a lifetime member of Big Spring United Methodist Church and was the oldest surviving member. Joanna was proud to be a lifetime farmer, loved gardening (her green beans were her trademark), and she enjoyed spending time with her beloved family, especially her grandchildren.
Joanna is survived by a nephew, her three sons and their families, which includes seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Two grandchildren preceded her in death, granddaughter Lauren Fortner-Lucas and great grandson David Wayne Brumfield.
She will be remembered for her tasty Tenderette green beans, her resilience in beating cancer three times, and letting everyone know that she was a farmer and that’s what made her strong.
