Evelyn Martin Gatewood, age 91, of Irvington, KY, passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at Helmwood Heights Nursing and Rehab in Elizabethtown, KY.
She was born on June 23, 1933, in Big Spring, KY, daughter of the late Carl Lee Martin and Edith Carter Martin. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Larry Paul Gatewood; and her brother, Donald L. Martin.
Evelyn was a graduate of Vine Grove High School and the Bryan Stratton Business College. She retired from Meade County RECC after 23 years as an accountant. Evelyn was an accomplished painter, and could create beautiful drawings from oils, watercolors, pen, and ink. She was a very active member of the Irvington United Methodist Church. Evelyn and Larry started the local Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF) group and went on to work with the Extra Years of Zeal (XYZ) Club. She served on the bereavement committee for 20 years and then moved on to continue her ministry through the communion committee. Throughout her life, her love for the Lord and her desire to spread His Word did not waiver. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all.
She is survived by her children, Gail Ann Clark and Mark Carl Gatewood; six grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at the Alexander Funeral Home (509 Spring Street, Irvington, KY 40146) on Friday, April 12, 2024, from 4:00-8:00 PM EDT.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 10:00 AM EDT at the Big Spring Methodist Cemetery.
