Charles Eugene "Gene" Whelan

Mr. Charles Eugene “Gene” Whelan, age 91, of Brandenburg, KY, passed away on Friday, August 9, 2024 at Signature Healthcare of North Hardin.  Gene was born July 3, 1933, the son of Charles Alton and Mary Adelia (Ritchie) Whelan.

Gene proudly served his country as a soldier in the United States Army.  He loved music and was a master at playing the trombone.  He played in several bands throughout the years including the Kosair Shriners Band and the Mello Tones.  Gene also enjoyed the outdoors and raising horses, bird dogs, and beagles.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Marion, Frank, James “Red” and Randall Whelan; his sister, Mary Lou Shireman; his granddaughter, Alexia; his brother-in-law, Robert Shireman; and his sister-in-law, Shirley Whelan.  He is survived by five children. Lisa (Alfred) Flaherty, Eric Whelan, Gina (Whitney) Stith, Carla (Michael) Hilse, and Bryan Whelan; five grandchildren, Erica (Alex) Hall, Lauren (Irvin Schuchart) Taylor, Corey (Andi) Whelan, Brandon Marsee, and Carly Stith; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Rosetta (Bill) Ditto, and Anna (Jack) McGehee; and three sisters-in-law, Rosalie, Cille, and Lori.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at the chapel of the Hager Funeral Home, with Deacon Mike Jones officiating.  Burial, with military honors, will follow in St. George Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at Hager Funeral Home in Brandenburg from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, and after 10:00 AM on Thursday.
