JOHN STANLEY JOHNSTON

John Stanley (“Stan”) Johnston of Ashburn, VA passed peacefully to his creator on November 27, 2023 at the age of 76 following a courageous battle with Alzheimer's.

A beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend, Stan was born on November 25, 1947, in Brandenburg, Kentucky. He was the son of the late Roy Lee (Barney) Johnston and the late Wilma Jean Hardin Johnston. He is survived by his wife of more than two decades, Gloria Martin; two brothers, Bradley Johnston (Rosemary) and Steve Johnston; and by two sisters, Peggy Wayne and Sissy Wolf (Dallas).

Stan was proud of his family and heritage in Meade County. After graduation from Meade County High School in 1965, Stan enlisted in the Army where he maintained a distinguished 20 year service record in the Army Reserve, retiring as a Master Sergeant. He was the recipient of multiple awards including the National Defense Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and Army Commendation Medal.

In his civilian career, Stan worked as a cartographer for the Defense Mapping Agency with areas of increased responsibility as the Agency evolved into the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. On his last position, he was chosen to be the Chief of Staff for the Director of National Intelligence, retiring in 2010.

Stan was kind, honest, generous of heart, and gentle of soul. He was well liked by all and remembered for his warm, infectious smile. He greatly enjoyed music and books, concerts and visiting historical places.

Stan’s final wish was to be brought home to his family in Brandenburg Kentucky and interred close to his parents. A memorial service/interment is planned for June 8, 2024, 2:30pm at Cap Anderson Cemetery in Brandenburg.”
