Jay W. Wethington

Mr. Jay W. Wethington, age 83, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, July 18, 2024.  Jay was born in Owensboro, KY on March 6, 1941, the son of William A. and Mary Frances Arnold Wethington.  His family moved to Black Oak, IN when Jay was a teenager.  He proudly served the United States Navy for six years and was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict.  When Jay returned to civilian life, he moved to Louisville and began his career with General Electric, working in the Maintenance Department until his retirement in 1996.  Once retired, Jay quickly figured out that he was not meant to stay home.  He became a driver for the Meade County Messenger from 1997-2003, followed by driving, and then becoming a supervisor, for TACK from 2004-2018.  He then served on TACK’s Board of Directors from 2018 -2024.  Jay also earned the prestigious title of Kentucky Colonel in 1988.  He became a member of the Robinson Masonic Lodge #266 in Louisville, KY in 1979, earning his 32nd degree in 1997.

In his younger years, Jay liked fast cars and women.  He never met a stranger and loved to laugh.  He was a very wise man and always wanted to share his advice with you, whether you wanted to hear it or not.  Jay took pride in being a three time cancer survivor over a 21 year period.  Regrettably, with his fourth battle he said, “I am 83 years young, I have done a lot of things, and I have had a great life.”

Jay was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Arnold (Virgil) Segars; his father, William Albertus (Dorothy) Wethington; his son, James William “Jimmy” Wethington; his wife, Mary Jean McGehee Wethington; and his brother, Larry Neal Marksberry.  He is survived by his daughter, Rhonda (Todd) Carter; his bonus daughter, Donna (Kurt) Barr, his bonus son, Larry McGehee; four grandchildren, Christopher (Samantha) Carter, Nicholas Carter, Katelyn (Ethan) Pawley, and Christy (Shea) Gossett; four great grandchildren, Paige, Jase, Jack, and Nate; two brothers, Chuck (Renee) Wethington, and Burt (Linda) Wethington; his sister, Tammy Wethington (Jeff) Hatfield; his aunt, Mildred “Millie” Devers; many nieces, nephews, cousins, family, friends, and his beloved dog, Buddy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday, July 22, 2024, at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, with Revs. Michael Martin and Toan Do officiating.  Cremation will follow.  Visitation will be held at the church from 12:00 Noon until the time of mass on Monday.  Military honors will immediately follow mass in the Narthex of the church.  Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Hosparus of Central Kentucky, or to Alzheimers Association.
