David Eugene Schaftlein, age 96, of Battletown, KY, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2026, at Norton’s Pavilion in Louisville, KY.
He was born on September 20, 1929, in Louisville, KY, son of the late Ignatius Joseph Schaftlein and Gladys Howlett. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 77 years, Frances Geraldine Schaftlein; 2 sisters, Ann Ballard and Linda Able; and 4 brothers, Kenneth, Donald, Paul, and Bruce Schaftlein.
David was a member of St Mary Magdalene of Pazzi Catholic Church. He loved to build and grow things, which was evident in his carpentry work, cattle, and crops. He was known for his skills and handywork, which allowed him to take the lead on many big projects throughout the community; if you needed something done right, he was the man for the job. David was a provider and did everything he could to make sure the people he loved were taken care of, whether that was through building beautiful furniture for his kids, sharing his garden with his friends, or simply lending a helping hand. He loved spending time outdoors, especially taking a walk along the river to study and collect artifacts. He leaves behind a legacy built on hard work, passion, and generosity.
He is survived by his children, Ronnie Schaftlein, Wayne (Darlene) Schaftlein, Donna Schaftlein Redgrave, Karen Schaftlein, Deborah Schaftlein, Gail (Ken) Pineault, Randy (Rita) Schaftlein, David (Lisa) Schaftlein, and Daniel (Jill) Schaftlein; brother, Steve Schaftlein; 18 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
