Sue Carol Whelan Applegate, age 86, of Brandenburg, KY, passed away on March 7, 2024 at her home with her family by her side.
She was born on February 7, 1938 in Brandenburg, KY, daughter of the late Fred Whelan, Sr. and Erma Geneva Whelan Troutman. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Kortney Michelle Richardson; and her brother, Fred Whelan, Jr.
Sue graduated from Meade County High School as Salutatorian in 1956, and went on to work as a purchasing agent for Olin. She met her sweetheart, “Slug”, when they were children and they danced through life together for over 67 years. The most important thing to her was her family, and she made the best memories with them. She was the #1 supporter of her kids and grandkids, whether it was at horse shows, school events, or anything else they accomplished. Sue was a wonderful cook, a great dancer, and the best Granny. She had a genuine, kind heart and had a way of making everyone feel special. Whenever she was around, you were going to feel welcomed, loved, and valued. She was a devoted Sweetie, Mom, Granny, and friend, and will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her adoring husband, Allen “Slug” Applegate; three daughters, Vicki (Boston) Hensley of Horse Cave, KY, and Kelli (Todd) Kennedy and Aimee (Rob) Fackler, both of Brandenburg; ten grandchildren, Heather (Parker) Meredith, Bo Hensley, Allyn (Brandon Croghan) Hensley, Sherry (Kareem) Kennedy, Jared (Katie) Richardson, Sara (David) Pile, Kody Kennedy, Megan (Thad) Storms, Jake Fackler, and Marlee Fackler; and ten great-grandchildren, Hensley, Park, Bailey, Magan, Layla, Rayleigh, Brayden, Alaina, Bailey, and Vinny;
Visitation will be held at the Bruington-Jenkins-Sturgeon Funeral Home in Brandenburg, on Sunday, March 10, 2024 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. EST and will continue on Monday, March 11, 2024 at the Brandenburg United Methodist Church, (215 W. Broadway, Brandenburg, KY 40108) after 10:00 A.M EST.
Funeral Services will be held at the Brandenburg United Methodist Church on Monday, March 11, 2024 at 12:00 P.M. EST with Rev. Lynn Beach officiating. Burial will follow in Cap Anderson Cemetery.
